In the late nineties, an analysis was undertaken of the future requirements of the Banco de la República Gold Museum and its collection. Needs that were identified included renewing the scientific texts in order to bring them into line with information gleaned from the most recent archaeological digs, and providing the exhibition with a contemporary museography, one that was on a par with the most important museums in the world.
The architectural and museographic project to renew and expand the museum was conceived back in 1998, in two stages. The first stage involved constructing a new building, designed by Germán Samper Gnecco, who had also been the architect for the earlier Museum, opened in Santander Park in 1968. The new Museum building and the respective exhibition galleries opened to the public in December 2004. The second stage consisted of refurbishing the 1968 building and linking it to the new one. To achieve this, the Museum was able to rely on a coordinated team of architects, museographers and designers, meaning that a project was possible where architecture and museography were in full harmony with each other.
This large, new, modern building tells the story of how gold and other metals were used by the pre-Hispanic societies that once lived in the territory now known as Colombia. The new scientific and museographic text for the exhibition has been built around the metaphor of the metal process, as conceived by pre-Hispanic societies, namely that they extracted metal from the earth, worked it, used it, symbolised it, and finally returned it to the earth in the form of an offering. Museum staff brought this concept together in four main themes, each of which has given its name to the great galleries that make up the permanent exhibition: The Working of Metals, People and Gold in Pre-Hispanic Colombia, Cosmology and Symbolism, and The Offering.
The permanent exhibition is complemented by services which allow visitors to study certain aspects more closely, such as thematic tours, pedagogical animations, audioguides in Spanish, English and French, a multimedia room, and a study room where the visitor can investigate and read about subjects connected with the exhibition. It can be seen from the programmes that are arranged in the auditorium and the large permanent exhibition galleries that the Museum is also a research centre, a centre for academic interaction, dissemination, cooperation, and national and international strategic alliances.
The Gold Museum is a place where Colombia's pre-Hispanic past and memory are wonderfully on view. It also fosters present-day cultural diversity. The Exploratorium, which sets out to stimulate curiosity and to encourage the asking of questions, is thus a favourite spot for children, youngsters and even adults to do more than just acquire knowledge, for it encourages them to ask themselves questions about things like who we are, what our archaeological heritage is, and what it means.
