Outstanding foreign debt
During 1998, Colombian foreign
indebtedness stood at US$33.9 billion (32.8% of GDP), with a variation of US$1.9 billion,
equivalent to 5.8% of GDP. Of this amount, 54.2% (US$18.4 billion) corresponds to the
public sector, while private foreign indebtedness was 45.8% (US$15.5 billion). At the end
of December 1999, it is estimated that the outstanding foreign debt will stand at US$34.2
billion (37.4% of GDP), US$337 million higher than in 1998. Of this amount, 57.5% (US$19.7
billion) will be held by the public sector, while 42.5% (US$14.5 billion) will correspond
to the private sector. It should be noted that 97.3% of outstanding public sector is long
term debt, and 2.7% is short term. In the private sector, these percentages are 78.3% and
21.6%, respectively.
