At the end of the third quarter of 2001, Colombian foreign debt stood at US$36.0
billion (44.2 of projected annual GDP) a US$2.5 billion increase from the registered in
the year 2000. This external financing behavior is due to the increase of the public
sector indebtedness (US$2.1 billion), and to a lesser extent that of the private sector
(US$431 million (m)). Of the total foreign debt, 62.1% corresponded to the public sector
and 37,9% to the private agents. In terms of maturity, 90.3% (US$32.5 billion) is long
term debt and 9.7% (US$3.5 billion) correspond to short term obligations. At the end of
the year 2001, it is estimated that foreign debt will reach US$37.4 billion, of which
US$23.7 billion would be in hands of the public sector and US$13.8 billion would
correspond to the private agents.
