At the end of the second quarter of 2001, Colombian foreign debt stood at US$35.7
billion (43.4% of projected annual GDP), a US$1.9 billion higher from the level observed
in the same period of 2000. The indebtedness external growth was explained by the higher
external liabilities of the public sector (US$1.6 billion) and to a lesser extent, of the
private sector (US$296 million). Of the total foreign financing, 61.3% corresponds to the
public sector and the 38.7% to the private sector. In terms of maturity, 89.9% (US$32.1
billion) is long term debt, and the rest is short term 10.1%, (US$3.6 billion). It is
estimated that at the end of the year 2001, foreign debt will reach US$34.5 billion of
which US$22.8 billion will be held by the public sector and US$13.6 billion by private
sector agents.
