Foreign investment
During the first semester of 1999,
foreign investment flows to Colombia reached US$691million, 45.4% lower than in the same
period of 1998. This reduction is explained by the lower net direct investment revenues,
US$532 million, especially those going to the communication, financial and electric
sectors and to petroleum related activities, US$208 million. Direct foreign investments
was channeled primarily to the mining sector, to the manufacturing sector to the financial
system and to the trade sector which together reached 73.3% of the total. Portfolio
investment registered a net outflow of US$24 million during the first semester of 1999. In
the same period of 1998 portfolio investment registered a net inflow of US$20 million.
During 1999 a US$ 1.1 billion foreign investment inflow is expected.
