Foreign investment
During the first quarter of 1999,
foreign investment flows to Colombia reached US$443 million, US$446 million lower than in
the same period of 1998. This reduction is explained by the lower net direct investment
revenues which decreased by US$338 million, especially those going to the communication
and financial sectors. Direct investments was channeled primarily to the mining sector,
particularly to coal projects, to the manufacturing sector and to the financial system.
Portfolio investment registered a net outflow of US$15 million during the first quarter of
1999, in the same period of 1998 portfolio investment registered a net inflow of US$93
million.
