At the end of the third quarter of 2001, foreign investment in Colombia reached US$1.7
billions with a US$122 million (m) growth with regards to the registered in the same
period of the previous year. This result is due to the increase of direct investment flows
(US$148 m), especially in the petroleum sector that in 2001 obtained income for US$217 m,
while in the previous year registered expenditures of US$488 m. Direct investments with
destiny to the rest of sectors, which registered a decrease of US$557 m and added US$1.513
m, were principally channeled to communications, mining and quarries and to the industrial
sector. On the other hand, portfolio investment registered net capital outflows of US$14
m, while one year behind, net incomes were US$12 m.
