Foreign trade - Exports
Between January-March of 2001,
Colombian exports reached US$3.0 billion, with an annual decrease of US$144 million (4.6%)
due to the lower income from traditional exports (US$315 million), in contrast with the
increase of the non-traditional goods (US$171 million). This decrease in traditional goods
external sales is due to the reduction in hydrocarbon exports (US$309 million, 26.8%) and
to a lesser extents in coffee exports (US$47 million, 21.2%). The mild dynamism of oil
exports was due to the volume exported which decreased (11.4%), and the coffee exports
which decreased. The later, due to the fall of international prices (37.5%). On the other
hand, the non-traditional export growth (11.8%) was due to the industrial goods sales
(US$161 million) particularly machinery and equipment, graphics and craftsmanship. Also
increased although in a lesser extent, coal (14.4%) and ferroníquel (11.6%) sales. The
exports geographic allocation was led by the United States (46.2%), the Andean Group
(19.0%), the European Union (14.1%) and Japan (1.1%).
