Economic Performance in the second quarter of 2001

In 2001 GDP grew by 1.56% in Colombia, showing a deceleration from the rate of growth registered in 2000 of 2.8%. Inflation continued to descend and at the end of the year was a slight below the target level fixed by the Board of Director in accord with the Government. The current account turned deficitary for the first time since 1999, due to a lower export and higher imports. At the end of 2001, international reserves stood at US$ 10.2 billion equivalent to 9.8 month of goods imports, 7.6 of goods and services and 2.8 times the short-term external debt balance.
