Preliminary figures show that during the first semester of 2001, the non-financial
public sector showed a deficit of Col. $2.3 trillion, (1.24% of GDP). This result was
higher than that observed in the same period of 2000 which was $200.1 billion, (0.12% of
GDP). Between these two periods, the National Government increased its deficit in 0.86% of
GDP, while the sectors that traditionally present surpluses as the social security sector
and Ecopetrol, reduced it by 0.01% and 0.47% of GDP respectively. Additionally, the PSSF
(Petroleum Saving and Stabilization Fund included in the group of other entities, reduced
their positive balance by 0.25% of GDP as a consequence of the international oil prices
decrease.
