Public sector
Official figures show that during the
first quarter of 2001, the non-financial public sector showed a deficit of Col. $851
billion, (0.44% of GDP), in contrast with the $1.273 billion (0.74% of GDP) surplus
observed the first quarter of 2000. It is worth mentioning that between these two periods,
the National Government increased its deficit in 0.4% of GDP, while the sectors that
traditionally present surpluses as the social security sector and Ecopetrol, reduced it by
0.29% and 0.05% of GDP respectively. Additionally, the deficit increase was due to a
reduction by 0.39% of GDP in the positive balance showed by the PSSF (Petroleum Saving and
Stabilization Fund included in the rest of entities group).
