Consumer and
producer price indices
The annual inflation rate in June
1999, calculated by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) stood at 9.0%, 11.7 percentage points
lower than in 1998. The sectors that registered an annual variation lower than the average
were food 0.3% and clothes 5.3%; the rest (housing 11.4%, health 19.0%, education 12.9%,
transport 16.8% and others 13.0%), exhibited annual variations higher than the average. On
the other hand, the annual variation of the Producer Price Index (PPI) stood at 6.1%.
Prices of imported goods increased 11.4%, while those for domestic goods increased 5.4%.
