Consumer and
producer price indices
In 1998, the annual variation of the
Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 16.7%, 1 percentage point lower than in 1997. The decline
in inflation is explained by the generalized decrease in goods and services prices. On the
other hand, the annual variation of the Producer Price Index (PPI) stood at 13.5%, 4
percentage points lower than in 1997. Prices of industrial goods showed the highest growth
rate (15.5%), followed by agricultural (10.0%) and mining goods (-8.2%).
