Consumer and
producer price indices


The consumer inflation of 2000, showed as the December annual variation of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 8.75%, registering two consecutive years with a one-digit inflation rate. The annual growth rate of the year 2000 was 0.5 percentage points lower than the one registered in 1999. The 82.4% of the CPI behavior was due to the variation rates of transportation, food, housing and other expenditures (16.24%), (7.41%), (4.90%) and (15.21%) respectively. The remaining 17.6% corresponds to education (9.45%), health (10.29%), entertainment (11.72%) and clothing (3.58%). The producer inflation showed as the Producer Price Index (PPI) annual variation stood at 11.04% in 2000. By economic activity the main contribution in the annual price increase was due to industry (83.7%) which registered a 11.94% annual price increase followed by agricultural and mining, which increased by 6.01% and 27.31% respectively. By origin, imported goods annual variation prices was 12.47% while national goods are 10.58%. By economic use and allocation, the goods highest price increases were in construction materials 12.88%, intermediate goods 10.94%, final goods 10.84%, and capital goods 10.83%.
