Unemployment rate


According to the National Household Survey of the National Administrative Department of Statistics, the unemployment rate in December for the seven main metropolitan areas was 19.7% in the year 2000, which represents an decrease of 0.8 percentage point with respect to September of the same year. In contrast with December 1999, the unemployment rate is 1.7 percentage points higher, representing a growth in the number of unemployed people, by 172,000. Basically this result is due to the participation rate increase which was 0.8 percentage point in contrast with the figures registered in December of 1999, 63.8%, and by a 0.4 percentage points fall of the occupation rate registered between December 1999 and December 2000. The metropolitan areas that registered the highest unemployment rates were Pasto (21.3%), Manizales (21.1%), and Cali (21.0%), while the lowest were Bucaramanga (16.8%) and Barranquilla (15.2%).
