Unemployment rate
According to the National Household
Survey of the National Administrative Department of Statistics, the unemployment rate for
the seven main metropolitan areas was 20.5% in September of 2000, which represents an
increase of 0.4 percentage point with respect to September of 1999. During this quarter
the metropolitan areas which registered the highest unemployment rates were Manizales
(22.4%), Cali (21.5%), Pasto (21.3%), Medellín (21.2%) Barranquilla (20.3%) and Bogotá
(20.2%), while the lowest was Bucaramanga (17.8%). Between September 1999 and September
2000, the number of unemployed people in the seven metropolitan areas grew by 106,000
people. For the same period, the global participation rate stood at 64.8%, 1.5 percentage
points higher than the one observed in September 1999. The occupation rate grew from 50.6%
in September 1999 to 51.5% in September of 2000.
