Unemployment rate
The unemployment rate for the seven
main metropolitan areas was 20.2% in March of 2000, in the same month of 1999, this rate
was of 19.5% and in December 1999, 18.0%. According to the National Household Survey of
the National Administrative Department of Statistics, the metropolitan areas which
registered the highest unemployment rates, were Medellin (22.2%) and Cali (21.5%), while
the lowest were Pasto (16.9%) and Barranquilla (18.9%). Likewise, between March 1999 and
March 2000, the number of unemployed in the seven metropolitan areas grew by 127,197
people. For the same period, the global participation rate increased 1.6 points, from
62.3% to 63.9%, and the occupation rate grew by 0.9 points, from 50.1% to 51.0%.
